The Wounded Warrior Mentor Program (WWMP) at Fort Meade is in need of mentors with a military background to assist the approximately 200 Wounded Warriors on base with planning their futures.
The role of the volunteer mentor is to assist the Wounded Warriors and their families with:
• setting life goals based on their interests
• guiding them down the path towards achieving those goals both before and after being discharged or leaving the medical facility, if remaining in the service
• serving as a sounding board for Wounded Warriors’ ideas, questions and concerns
• facing the future realistically to make decisions about their own future
• encouraging them to take full advantage of their educational benefits and internship or job opportunities to fit their academic and professional career goals
• preparing a personal budget and making sound financial plans
WWMP also sets up a “Follow-On Mentor” when the soldiers are discharged to help them transition to civilian life. WWMP works with the mentor and the follow-on mentor to transition the mentorship prior to discharge.
