Army honors FGGM and FMA for its partnership

The U.S. Department of the Army has awarded Fort George G. Meade and the Fort Meade Alliance a 2019 Army Community Partnership Award for their collaboration to renovate Kuhn Hall into the installation’s new Resiliency and Education Center.

The 9,000-square-foot revamped facility will improve the lives of military personnel, their families and DoD civilians providing a welcoming place to connect with each other as well as vital resources, services and programs for the Fort Meade community.

“The renovation of Kuhn Hall would not be possible without the support of the community, which saw a need for us to have a dedicated Education and Resiliency Center and worked to make it possible,” said Fort Meade Garrison Commander Col. Erich Spragg. “In addition to providing educational, financial and family resources, Kuhn Hall will allow Fort Meade service members to walk into a facility to address mental health issues in a way that will hopefully erase any perceived stigma.”

In 2013, the Fort Meade Alliance and the Fort Meade Alliance Foundation began this significant effort to establish the Resiliency and Education Center, which would focus on the five pillars of resiliency: physical, emotional, social, family and spiritual.

The new center will feature services ranging from guidance counseling and transition services to mental health counseling, wellness programs and financial planning. A premier benefit of this space will be new programming for educational programs needed for successful career placement and continuing education, and expansion of existing programs to broader audiences, including spouses.

“We are honored to receive this award…the greatest honor is to serve those who serve, and this new facility will do just that for years to come,” said FMA Foundation President Deon Viergutz. “We cherish our partnership with Fort Meade and all those who live, work and raise their families here.”

The U.S. Army’s Community Partnership Awards recognize exceptional community partnerships that have improved readiness, driven modernization and contributed to reform initiatives throughout the Army. Submissions were evaluated on how the partnerships improve or enhance readiness; modernize services, systems, or processes; provide cost or other efficiencies; expand capabilities; improve the lives of Soldiers and their families; and improve community relations.

Fort Meade and the Fort Meade Alliance were among 10 awardees that will be recognized at a ceremony on Dec. 5 at the Pentagon.

”We are very proud to share the news of this award and honored to be in the company of all the Army Community Partnership Award winners who, like the Fort Meade Alliance, seek to improve the lives of our U.S. military service members and their families,” said FMA President Doreen Harwood.

The Fort Meade Alliance and the Fort Meade Garrison have had a strong partnership for years.

In 2010, they earned the Secretary of Army Quality of Life Partnership Award presented to new or exciting partnerships that have improved soldier or family quality of life programs. The award was given as a result of the successful partnership that furnished and outfitted the Soldier and Family Assistance Center at Fort Meade.
